SXSW Day 1 Recap – the good, the bad, and the WTF is it?
Alright conference go'rs and watch'rs, day 1 of SXSW is complete. Today's report will be short as its a mini-day today. The real action begins on Saturday morning. I thought I would give you a quick pro/con plus a WTF is this giveaway…
One of the best parts about AlwaysOn was their great lcd panels around the conference with live chat, info, etc. SXSW could absolutely use this as well. For example, the session this evening was moved across the center. Me and another dude walked back and forth and back because no one knew it was moved and the staff had no idea either. Yes, it was on the paper in the bag but who reads the paper! Get with the times people and buy 10 lcd panels for $8k and be done with it.
Pros:
- Lots of staff to help
- Staff is very positive, friendly and fun
- Convention center offers excellent air conditioning
- Nice large bag to carry crap, works as a good grocery bag afterwards
- Sharpie marker is a nice touch
Cons:
- Names on badges could be bigger
- Long waits for registration
- 100 lbs of crap in the bag :)
- It's already summer in texas
Ok, now who can tell me what this giveaway in the bag is? It is a plastic person with a head that comes off to reveal a jelly-like substance. Maybe I am the lamest person ever, but I have no idea what this is!

Maybe its hand cream or something like that. I am looking forward to more of your coverage Allen. Don’t forget the audio stuff :p
It is not a hand cream. :)
I will try to get audio but they want to limit to 30 seconds – so let me see what I can do. Don't worry, I have done covert operations for the international irc army so I am pretty good at this stuff :)
HA
a) Lubricant?
or
b) Hand Sanitizer?
or
C) has it got enough substance/viscosity that you can gather it into a sticky ball, throw it on to a slick wall surface and it sticky blobs its way down the wall?
I thought I figured it out – you stick it upside down on the table and the jelly sticks to the table and it holds a paper or letter. But alas, my test proved negative as the man (or woman) just fell over.
The jelly is very light in the sticky matter.
The VitalStream booth will be seeing me today and will be getting a noogie!
It's not a lubricant – not a hand sanitizer either, and it won't blob down the wall :)
I think it’s meant to be a dart of some kind… I threw it out, but it came with a sticker which I think indicated that the little guy can be thrown at some target from the company that distributed this thing… Took a little while for me to get it, even with the note…
