Systems Administrator with Aspirations

Want to use your technical background to make a difference? Do you grok the difference between TCP and UDP?

The Open Planning Project is a ‘dot-org,’ a non-profit connecting open source software with social change. We are looking for a systems administrator to help maintain the integrity of our development environment. You will work with our lead systems administrator to ensure that day-to-day operations run smoothly, and to build on our existing infrastructure.

– Responsibilities –

- Build and deploy new servers for projects that really need to scale.
- Assist with day-to-day maintenance, including backup, upgrades, patches, etc.
- Resolve technical, capacity, and security issues
- Asset tracking, ordering, and documentation
- Create and manage user accounts
- Help manage wired and wireless network
- Work with open source software to build enterprise level systems (Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc.)
- Research, recommend, and implement new technologies
- Some desktop support

– You Offer –

- Linux fluency. Experience with Gentoo is ideal, other flavors are a plus.
- Strong understanding of networks and servers, including: firewalling, VLANs, VPN, Apache, LDAP, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NFS, NIS.
- Knack for troubleshooting a variety of system, networking, and hardware problems.
- Experience with shell scripting.
- In-depth knowledge of routers and switches.
- Background maintaining email systems and directory services.
- Fluid communication skills and technical curiosity.
- An interest in the positive potential of technology.
- BS in Computer Science preferred, but not required.

You are a quick study who can prioritize competing needs. Must be motivated, self-organizing, and great to work with. Experience with MySQL, data center equipment, VoIP, all pluses. Strong programming background, a big plus.
