Userplane Partners With ConVerdge

by Allen - July 9th, 2008

userplaneUserplane has announced a distribution deal this morning wth ConVerdge. ConVerdge is a white label social networking provider focusing on the community side of the house.

The first two Userplane products to be integrated are Webchat2 and Webmessenger2. Webchat2 is a text, video and voice widget while Webmessenger2 is an instant messaging product. Userplane says further distribution with ConVerdge will be coming soon.

While not directly mentioned, Userplane’s social ad network will certainly play a role in this distribution. Their ad network serves over 500 million ads a month to over 50 million monthly users. This could lead to incremental revenue for the ConVerdge sites that load the Userplane tools.

The first ConVerdge site they have rolled out this new functionality is the Mashable community site. The Mashable community currently shows over 60,000 members (I am guessing 10-15% are active).

AOL Goes After Skype With New Voice API

AOLAOL is announcing the launch of their Open Voice API today. The Open Voice API will work with the AIM Call Out service which allows users of AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) to call out worldwide. I guess AIM Call Out could be considered a Skype competitor though it’s not as feature rich or as polished an application.

The new API will allow developers to create applications that build on the AIM Call Out functionality and use devices including softphones and mobile devices with WiFi capabilities. Steve Murphy, Senior Vice President, AOL said, "Were building on the popularity of the Open AIM program and opening up the AIM Call Out platform, enabling open standards voice communication services to proliferate in the marketplace." Check out the developer guidelines for the API.

Both AOL Call Out and Skype’s "Skype Out" service charge per minute and offer monthly unlimited plans.

Lots o’ buddies – eBuddy hits 5 millionth mobile user

eBuddyeBuddy just released stats at 3GSM that they have reached the five million mark with their mobile IM product. This is five million on the mobile side, not the desktop side which makes this even more powerful. I can't wait until mobile catches up in the U.S. Of course wireless carriers won't cut their data rates so who knows whether it will ever happen.

Mobile Director Jan-Joost Kraal, "Instant Messaging on mobile phones is expanding rapidly. Over the last six months, we have seen an astonishing monthly growth from 5 to 33 percent. Since the introduction of this service, 5 million mobile users have sent and received close to 1 billion messages through our platform. Over 400.000 daily logins underline the market’s receptiveness for our Mobile IM services."

Check out my interview with eBuddy.

Meebo hits a milestone

MeeboMeebo announced yesterday that they hit the 500,000 user mark. I remember the first time I saw Meebo and wondered who would use this service. Over time I have learned that they really do provide an excellent value. Even if you just look at it as not having to install all the individual tools. But this is an example of a company that embraces their users, welcomes feedback and really is a shining star for the Web 2.0 and web apps market.

Some notes from the release:

How many times do people login every single day? 950,000!! You may ask how many of those are “unique?” About 670,000. It turns out most of you happen to log in about 1.4 times per day. Oh, and here’s another interesting one… how many network accounts do you all log in with on average? Also 1.4…which means 1.35 million network ID are logged in daily. Over 3.5 million unique individuals log into meebo every month, and on a daily basis you’re all sending and receiving a mere 57,000,000 messages.

I have requested an interview with them and hopefully we will have it up within a week. I want to find out what's next and whether they will look at somehow working with Skype as well.

– thanks to Till for sending in the news.
