Earlier this month NY-based Unype rebranded with a new name, Centrl. The service is described as, “Centrl is a location-based social network that helps you connect with your friends, share your favorite locations, discover new places, meet new people and find special money-saving offers.” They note that the name change is to reflect the wider userbase they are targeting.

Centrl looks like a combination of BrightKite plus social networking and local information. They have also launched a new iPhone app which includes virtual gift capability and new content layers including Wikipedia and Yelp. The company notes that Blackberry and Android versions are coming soon.

Centrl works and connects with Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Hi5, Ning, Orkut, Bebo or Friendster.
