Gear Patrol – Online Men’s Magazine
NY-based Gear Patrol provides what they describe as, "the definitive resource for the ever-evolving man". To me the site combines a magazine, a blog and a typical website together. The site claims over 1,200 articles currently posted on the site. It looks like they have about 20 editors working across the globe plus about 10 staff positions. The site launched in 2007.
Content is offered in ten categories: electronics, entertainment, gear girls, guides, fashion, fitness, home, lifestyle, sports and vehicles. I like the layout as it presents the content well and many of the stories have large images (see below). I think they could shrink up the header to move the content higher on the page.
The Gear Patrol advertising page says they are not accepting traditional online advertising on the site and the ads on the site are internal ads.
For a content-based site, they sure do make it hard to subscribe. Only a couple of small links in the footer are available. Gear Patrol reminds me of a larger version of another NY-based men’s resource we’ve covered, Thrillist.
