9 Things I’m Done With Online (video)
Tonight I’d like to share with ya’all 9 things I am done with online. Rather than sharing them in text, check out the video below. Please add your suggestions to the list in the comments below.
Nielsen: Teens Watching 5+ Hours of Mobile Video a Month; 65+ Internet Usage Over 26 Hours
Nielsen is out with a new report which brings together TV, Internet and mobile usage together for U.S. households. They found that Americans are watching more than 127 hours a month of television programming. Could the higher gas prices and food prices be a factor in this increase?
Average Internet usage was up 9% to 26 hours a month. New metrics in the report include 2 hours of Internet video per month on average and 3 hours of mobile video for users who are subscribed to a mobile video plan.
The interesting chart is below – this is a breakdown of the above stats by age group. Teens who are subscribed to a mobile video plan are viewing over 5 hours of mobile video a month. For Internet users we see a bell curve with those in the 35-44 age bracket using the Internet the highest amount. But look at those 65+, they are using the Internet over 26 hours on average.
I’ve said many times that the 65+ market is one to consider as you think about creating a startup. I know it’s cool and hip to make a Twitter or FriendFeed, but there are other groups to consider – and many of those groups have money to spend and aren’t demanding free.

Akamai Releases State of the Internet Report
Akamai is out today with their first "State of the Internet" report. The report is well worth a read as it covers a variety of topics including: security, connection speeds, geography, network access, and Internet penetration. Some of the interesting stats include:
- China leads the world in attack traffic including denial of service attacks.
- Nearly 30% of attacks are to port 135 which is used for remote procedure calls on Microsoft operating systems.
- In March 2008, more than 10,000 Web pages on hundreds of Web sites were infected by hackers looking to steal passwords used in popular online games.
Here are a couple of the charts from the report.
High Broadband Connectivity: Fastest International Countries
As you can see in the chart below, South Korea leads the world as the fastest country with nearly 64% of connections to Akamai occurring at over 5 Mbps. Japan ranked second and the U.S. came in seventh.
Slowest International Countries
For those countries on some form of broadband, here are the countries with the slowest (less than 256k) connections. Rwanda came in first with nearly 100% of connections on these slower broadband connections. The U.S. shows nearly 8% of all connections at this speed – my mother is one of those 8% as she is still on a 56k modem.

How Do The Chinese Handle Internet Addiction? They Stun You With Electricity!
CNN International had an interesting video piece today about Internet addiction in China and specifically Chinese Youth. Every minute in China, 100 new people sign on to the Internet. A Chinese doctor was interviewed and believes that many of those addicted with ‘Internet’ are due to lack of self-confidence in the real world.
So how does China deal with those infected with Internet? Two ways: shock therapy and boot camp. Kids infected can be zapped with low-voltage electricity to get them trained on not using the Internet. Looks pretty painful with all the probes stuck in god-knows-where.
The other method is one that I think could work well here as well. It’s a boot camp for addicted kids and they teach social skills and play real-world games to get them off the keyboard.
With mobile usage rates continuing to grow, Internet addiction will grow exponentially. Instead of only being connected when sitting in front of a computer, you can now be connected 24×7 in every situation and with mobile devices becoming smarter – it’s just a matter of time before Quake shows up on the iPhone in multiplayer mode.
One Fourth of Internet Usage at Work is Spent on Personal Tasks; Would You Allow It?
Online advertising provider Burst Media has provided the results of their latest survey today. In it they have found that most respondents indicated that surfing while on the job is often not work related. One-fifth of respondents state that the workplace is the main locale for where they access the Internet.
Pretty interesting results from the survey speak about boredom. Respondents indicate that surfing while on the job is often not work related, with 26.2% of online time at work spent on personal activities. Men spend more online time at work on personal tasks than women (28.0% vs. 24.2%); and the youngest age segment, 18-24 years old, spend 34.4% of online time at work surfing for personal reasons. When asked why they surf the web at work for personal use, respondents most frequently cited the need to stay informed during the day (33.8%). Other reasons were boredom (20.5%), staying in contact with family and friends (18.5%) and convenience (i.e. faster Web connection than home, more accessible computer, convenient time to conduct online services).
Only one-quarter of employees (28.5%) feel guilty about using the Internet on company time, although women are more inclined to feel guilt than men (31.7% vs. 25.6%). Unfortunately the survey doesn’t provide information on which sites they are using.
We’ve written before about Internet usage at work and whether companies will draw back the ability to non-business surf during work hours. If you ran (or run) a large corporation, would you allow your employees to surf and if so, why?
Editor’s note: Burst Media handles a small percentage of the advertising on CN.
