Juicy Campus is a site (social network?) receiving a large amount of press this month. The idea is simple: each campus around the U.S. has a page and you can post whatever you like on it anonymously about students at that campus. Apparently some of the postings have been quite bad. The woman in the video below describes Juicy Campus as, “a place for students to talk sh** about each other”.

The service has been down lately (was down for me earlier, up now barely, down again) which apparently pushed it into Google Hot Trends as people were looking for information on why it was down.

Matt Ivester founded Juicy Campus as a way to share gossip on campuses. He basically says that Juicy Campus isn’t liable for what’s posted, the author would be if anyone is. comScore has no data on the site as of yet and their Alexa ranking is 125k but my guess is that internal student networks won’t contribute to Alexa’s ranking mechanism.

From The Prince George Citizen, ‘Duke’s vice-president for student affairs, Larry Moneta, said the school asked Ivester to consider “moderating the venom or at least moderating the opportunity for venom.” However, “my sense is that’s not that person’s interest,” Moneta said.’

While the site blocks search engines including Google from indexing the content, the real question is whether the content could hurt someone in the future from a job, a relationship, etc.

What do you think? Should sites like Juicy Campus be allowed?

Here is a video from a person who has been using the site since it launched:
