kalturaWe’ve covered NY-based Kaltura several times over the past couple of years. Kaltura describes their service as, “allow(ing) publishers of all sizes to easily, quickly, and cost effectively enhance their web site with video and interactive rich-media functionalities, including video management, searching, uploading, importing, editing, annotating, remixing, sharing, and advertising.”

Today Kaltura has announced the launch of the Kaltura Exchange marketplace. The marketplace is basically a platform to build apps and integrations on top of the Kaltura service. The company compares the Kaltura Marketplace to the Salesforce Force.com platform and the Apple iPhone/iPadd App Store.

Developers and other video services can build plugins, extensions and applications – both can be offered as free or paid options for users.

Some of the initial launch partners include: Adap.tv, Tremor Media, TubeMogul, PLYmedia, Artivision and MindTouch. Marketplace examples include a Google Analytics app and the TubeMogul premium paid syndication app.

unigoLast October, NY-based college review service Unigo announced a partnership with the WSJ to create “WSJ On Campus.” The service is described as, ““WSJ On Campus takes you into the dorms, classrooms and back offices to illuminate what goes on behind the scenes, with Journal reporters, current college students and noted experts providing their perspectives on every topic.”

Today NY-based Kaltura announced that they will be powering the video channel for Unigo and the WSJ On Campus partnership. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed although it is great to see more New York startups working together.

“When we created Unigo.com it was clear that video would be a huge part of what we were trying to achieve. Kaltura’s platform is a clear choice – it is extremely flexible, has advanced user-generated-content features, and the Kaltura team has great experience in supporting video both for social networks and for institutions in the Education space.” said Jordan Goldman, Unigo Founder and CEO.

The suite of Kaltura’s video tools will be available for students in the Unigo community. This partnership should do well for both companies since video reviews are a very important piece of Unigo’s overall offering.

KalturaNY-based online video collaboration tool Kaltura is announcing a partnership with WNET today. WNET is the parent of PBS stations Thirteen and WLIW in NYC. If my memory serves me, Thirteen is the most watched PBS station in the country and WLIW notes they are third most watched in the country.

Kaltura notes that their technology has been deployed on Worldfocus.org, the website for WNET’s nightly news program, allowing users to participate in an online video conversation about international news items and issues from around the world.

Neal Shapiro, President and CEO of WNET.ORG said, “In addition to leaning back and watching the broadcast, we wanted to give people a chance to lean forward and get involved, join the discussion and share their opinions face-to-face through our “Talk to US” feature.

What’s interesting is that it’s not just the NYC community that can participate in the videos but anyone from around the world. Should make for some interesting conversations. We’ve seen many news organizations starting to experiment with drawing their viewers into the conversation. Fox is always pushing Twitter and CNN has their iReport video submission service. We will continue to see this trend continue as all of this new content is monetizable without the same level of effort as in traditional media.

Kaufman from Intelligent Television. “Featuring the Kaltura platform in our new productions and in our research projects with moving image archives is very exciting.”
