Is Videoblogging In Trouble?
What’s going on in the news/daily show videoblogging space? Check out this list of activity over the last couple of months:
- CBS’ Wallstrip closes
- Mobuzz closes
- CBS’ Moblogic closes
- Leah D’Emilio leaves Mahalo Daily; apparently show reduced to 1x/week Youtube recap
- WebbAlert closes
- Scoble leaves FastCompanyTV
I’ve heard a lot of chatter that daily news review shows are having trouble growing their audiences because the news is typically always a day behind. In today’s "real time" required market, it makes sense that people aren’t interested in checking out the news they already read on a blog the day before. Yet some of the shows listed above are interview and segment shows, not daily video shows and they have also closed up shop.
I’ve also noticed several videobloggers willing to shill for any company that will pay. While overall online advertising is down, video advertising is supposed to be the one area of growth. I assume that most advertisers would rather spend their money on Hulu than on a small daily video show.
Are there any daily news/interview online video shows that are able to consistently generate a large audience and/or revenue?
The Puppet Talks To Tumblr, Wallstrip and MobLogic About What Makes Them So Successful
I spent this morning at an event hosted by The Media Kitchen. A variety of NY-based VC firms along with their portfolio companies presented general business updates. I captured a ton of video and will post my thoughts and the videos over the next few days. The Media Kitchen put together an absolutely hilarious opening video. I cut two snippets that I thought would be beneficial for anyone trying to grow their startup.
The first video has the puppet (Gary) interviewing Tumblr founder David Karp about what makes Tumblr so popular. Rather than give away the reason, just watch the very short video.
In this video, the puppet asks MobLogic host Lindsay Campbell and Wallstrip host Julie Alexandria how to keep viewers engaged. This could be the first time that Julie and Lindsay have appeared together!
Moblogic Demo
Last night at the NY Video Meetup, MobLogic presented their new daily online video show. I noted that I was not going to post the demo as it was basically just showing the actual show which you could watch on MobLogic.tv. Presenter Scott Solary asked if I would post the video so please find it below. I cut out most of the actual video show – go watch it live – better than my Canon capture.
Lindsay is a talented video host and should have stuck to Wallstrip. She also seems to love Crest white strips! While CBS will probably throw a ton of money at this show, I find the "person on the street" interviews to be cute for the first 1-2 days. Rather than stick with one video host, they are placing the videos on every host. Blip is their featured partner, one of the presenters had a Blip wallet. On the technical side, there is a very good implementation of Wordpress that seems to be pushing the envelope.
