IAC-owned online video hosting service Vimeo has announced that they will begin to remove source video files. The removal will take place beginning on August 1st. The source files will be stored for a week and then removed. Apparently storing huge video files costs money – can you believe it?!?

If you upgrade to a Vimeo Plus account, the source files will be stored as long as you are a pro member. Vimeo notes that they will continue to store the MP4 file that is used in the video player. A Vimeo Plus subscription is $60/year.

From the Vimeo announcement, “Please understand that this is not a devious scheme to force you to upgrade to Plus. This was a hard decision to make, but we make these changes to ensure Vimeo’s longevity so that you *can* use it for free.”

I wanted to see what the policy is regarding storing source files at another popular video hosting service so I spoke with Viddler’s technology evangelist Colin Devroe. Colin noted, “Our current and past policy has always been to keep original sources for as long as an account is active. We’ve recently begun to either delete, or archive, videos from accounts that haven’t had any activity in as long as a year – to help reduce costs. Although our policy may change in the future, we’re confident that we can keep original sources for as long as an account is active rather than for a specific duration after upload.”

NY-based video sharing service Vimeo has announced the launch of Vimeo Plus today. Vimeo Plus is a paid service that offers additional benefits over the free service. NewTeeVee has a good overview of all of the features of Vimeo Plus which include: $59.95/yr, no ads, more uploads per week, priority uploading and some HD features.

Rick Turoczy at RWW wonders if Vimeo can convert their loyal users into paying customers. He points to Flickr as an example although he says that $60/yr is "nominal" - I'd say up to $30 is nominal, over that is a much bigger buying decision. I do think this is an excellent test for the overall industry.

Viddler has introduced a number of new features that they could have charged a small amount for.

I hope Vimeo has included a Plus badge - I still believe that there is a social factor with badges - you don't want to be the only one in your circle without the Flickr Pro badge.

Vimeo Toys are discovery applications to check out the latest videos and activity on the Vimeo service.

Vimeo Toys is launching with two apps: Vimeo Land and Pulse. To engage the Vimeo community with Toys, the Vimeo staff is asking users to create applications using Vimeo Toys. They will highlight the best apps on the Vimeo homepage as well. What a smart idea to get new users engaged with the service and loyal users to build on top of the service.

As I create more videos and have more discussions with online video talent, the conversation seems to move many times to finding the optimum hosting and distribution structure for video. I want to make sure my viewers never hit a dead end and can easily find other videos to view from the series. Since at least half of my videos are business-oriented, the idea of putting them on YouTube and hoping for the "viral effect" is not attractive. Earlier this year I wrote about the online video market here in NYC and I see it continuing to expand today.

Currently I am using Viddler almost exclusively for my videos. I like Viddler because their player allows for in-stream commenting and their upload function is easy-to-use. I find the uploading function on YouTube to be absolute crap, can't they even offer an upload status bar?!? For the purposes of this discussion, we will only discuss pre-recorded video content and not live services (Mogulus, Ustream) or mobile video streaming (Kyte, Qik, Flixwagon).

I get the idea behind services like TubeMogul which put your content everywhere and I will probably look at doing this as well. But it's critical from my standpoint that you select a video sharing/hosting partner to work with in which you can build your video brand. This means that the player that's used on the video creator's site remain consistent over time. Some video content creators are being paid to use services and I see this trend continuing as the video creation market expands and hosting networks fight to get out of the commodity business.

There are a number of indie video stars on the scene today. I've selected Justine and Gary Vaynerchuk to use as examples with regards to how they use various video hosting networks for their videos and shows. When I check out Justine's Web site, she seems to use YouTube as her first choice and it's clear that this strategy has helped her with growing her brand. Justine has over 18,000 subscribers on YouTube. These subscribers drive massive views to her videos. She uses Viddler as well for some videos and all of her videos are distributed there as well. Gary Vaynerchuk at WineLibraryTV uses Viddler for the main player on the site. Gary also has a distribution deal with Revision3 which publishes a shorter wine show on Revision3 and other video hosting providers including YouTube.

There are more options than ever for video hosting – from the most basic YouTube through working with distribution partners like ForYourImagination who can produce, record and package the shows. Viddler, Vimeo, Veoh all sit in the middle and I’d consider blip.tv a "show" distributor.

Below is the setup I have been considering for the videos I create on CN. My goal is to find the best combination of:

reaching the largest audience

using the best technology

using a player with good usability for the viewer

outside distribution to as many sources as possible

tracking and analytics

ability to monetize the videos over time — either with cpm views or finding a sponsor

Business Shows:

These are videos I shoot of product demos and also include our interviews like the one we shot with Dina Kaplan last week. I am looking at using blip.tv for these videos. blip.tv can offer me a gallery player to allow viewers to watch any video they like. blip.tv also has an advertising network and also works with shows to find sponsors. This is very attractive to me – especially in the beginning. blip.tv will also distribute the shows to iTunes which could work relatively well for creating loyal viewers.

Fun Videos:

These videos include the Twitter Song and How to Effectively Quit Blogging. I see continuing to post these videos on Viddler because the interactivity and community there is a perfect fit for these videos.

Conclusion

I’d love some feedback on my thoughts and suggested video network usage for CN. What am I missing in creating the right mix? The next mission is to get a better video setup and move away from my tiny Canon Elph to something a bit more professional.

NY-based video sharing service Vimeo has decided to no longer allow video game videos. In an announcement made yesterday on the Vimeo company blog, Blake Whitman noted that new videos will be removed and current videos are subject to deletion after September 1st.

Blake explains that there are two main reasons for the change. First, Vimeo is about creative expression and copying a video game isn't creative expression. Second, the game videos are larger and longer than most other videos which causes their transcoder to push long wait times for other Vimeo members. I've noticed this wait on Viddler as well and from what I understand on Viddler it has to do with non-U.S. show content.

There are nearly 500 replies on the Vimeo blog discussing the change - most are for the change. Apparently YouTube also bans these type of video game videos. The big question in the forums is what specific videos will be deleted and which will remain. Apparently it will have a lot to do with what the staff call "creative merit".

StumbleVideo allows you to thumb up or down a video and then get presented with another one, and another, and so on. Each time you rate a video, the system becomes more intelligent about the videos you like and dislike. Over time StumbleVideo presents you videos that you are likely to be interested in.

The new video partners are: College Humor, Funny or Die, Vimeo, Dailymotion, veoh.com and vbs.tv.Previously StumbleVideo only offered content from YouTube, Google Video, MySpace Video and Metacafe. These new partnerships should provide a nice life in viewed videos for the new partners and for the content creators behind the videos.

YouTube continues to lead the pack and represents 98% of all videos in the Google Sites category. Tell me again why they keep Google Video around? It's seems Google abandoned it when they acquired YouTube.

Google moved up another 2.6 share points to 38% of all videos watched. The real telling statistic is that YouTube visitors watched an average of 50 videos each over the month. No one else comes close to this in the lead pack as Microsoft Sites comes in second with nearly 10 videos per user. More videos per user mean more ability and options to monetize over the session. In total videos watched, Fox Interactive came in second followed by Yahoo Sites, Viacom Digital and Microsoft Sites.

Another juicy bit in the report is that the average online video viewer watched 235 minutes of video. Wow. And with live video slowly taking off, this number will only continue to increase.

When Jakob Lodwick <strike>left</strike> was fired from Vimeo earlier this month, I immediately predicted that Lodwick would be working with Tumblr founder David Karp. It seems this might be closer to reality with some investigative journalism just completed by regular CN visitor and author, James Thomas.

This past Saturday, Lodwick posted about some new domains that he registered. The list includes:

The previous day Lodwick posted that he had dinner with Karp per his blog post and calls Karp a, "soon famous face."

This is where Thomas went to work. After some Columbo-type maneuvers, we know the full names of some of the domains that Lodwick registered:

The first IAC brands to utilize the new partnership are: Ticketmaster, Citysearch and 23/6.

Now I get why they did this -- it's about distribution. IAC Chairman Barry Diller even notes at this with his comment on the deal, "By making this platform available across IAC we can continue to deepen engagement with our online audiences, expand the reach of our brands, and open powerful new revenue streams through online video advertising across our sites."

But where's IAC-owned Vimeo in all of this? While I know Vimeo is a community-based video sharing site, couldn't Barry have created a white-labeled version of the system and monetized it using the IAC advertising network? While I don't think this means Vimeo is doomed by any means, it sure is interesting that they selected to go outside before thinking about their own properties and how to leverage them for growth.

It appears that Jakob Lodwick has left Vimeo. Valleywag believes he was fired, some say he quit. Who cares why. It's not like his next startup is going to do a background check. Liz says that Jakob remains an investor in the company.

The real question is what happens to Vimeo and Jakob now. Let's take Jakob first. My bet is that he appears on the payroll of Tumblr within ten days. A secondary option is some new startup based on video combined with love lessons with his girlfriend Julia Allison.

Vimeo is another story. In my opinion, Jakob was the "icon" of that site and depending on whether he still participates in the community will determine where the site goes. I compared Viddler and Vimeo recently and believe both sites have great potential in front of them. Both rely on their communities for growth and virality and with Jakob gone, those characteristics take a hit. Will people still lip dub now that he is gone? Sure, but he seemed to lead that charge on the site. Will the community fall apart without him? Not sure, but it might be the right time for another player to make an offer to the Vimeo community.

When I think about joining a startup, Vimeo would be one I would seriously consider as the community is strong and their technology is moving forward past the current leaders.

Earlier this week was the NY Video Meetup. Somewhere around 250 NY'ers attended and viewed a variety of demos and a healthy video discussion. One thing rang true throughout -- online video is HOT here in the city. So many companies, so many ideas and a amazing level of excitement/passion around online video.

Here are just a few of the companies in the online video space in the NYC area. I certainly forgot a bunch, so please leave them in the comments.

Magnify.net - providing video upload, encoding, storage, delivery, and rev share mainly for video clips (CN Coverage)

For Your Imagination - creating a variety of online-only video shows

WallStrip - filming in NYC about stocks with host Lindsay Cambell

Vimeo - video hoster and community creator (CN Coverage)

While other areas of the country and the world are creating online video, NY is where it's at. Innovation, technology, people, community, it's all here. And Madison Avenue and Google are here to monetize it all.

Vimeo sure has been getting some major media play the last week. We wrote about Vimeo in the challenge with Viddler and noted some of their new features as well, Silicon Alley Insider called them a "sale" and today they get mainstream attention from the NY Post.

Henry notes, "We groove on the concept, too, except from a business perspective: Streaming videos that are four times as sharp costs four times as much, and video companies are having a hard enough time making a living off of the crappy-definition stuff."

From the Post column, "According to founder Jakob Lodwick, the investment in HD was made worthwhile because Vimeo's user base is made up largely of amateur filmmakers, as opposed to casual fans who rip content from other sources and simply post it online. "Our audience completely rejects the notion that Web video needs to be a lower quality than television," said Lodwick, who came to IAC through its purchase of collegehumor.com."

I look at this as a potential monetization angle. Want HD? Pay $10/month. If Vimeo's user base is "largely amateur filmmakers" as Lodwick suggests (I disagree), then I believe they would go for a plan like this. If Henry is right and streaming HD videos costs 4x as much, I doubt basic ads can support it alone. Another angle is to provide white-label services for a fee to other social networking providers (i.e. Ning, KickApps, Magnify, etc.) along with other video startups.

Update: Viddler has been supporting HD from the beginning.

Earlier this week we posted a video sharing smackdown between Vimeo and Viddler, two of the leading sites for sharing video combined with social networking. I noted a few things that Vimeo could improve on regarding their player. Thanks to Jakob and the team, they made a ton of changes in the last day after my requests! Now if that ain't customer service, I don't know what is!

All kidding aside, I am very impressed with the upgrades. Check out the full list on the Vimeo blog. It will be interesting to learn if these social changes to the video player increase their traffic - my bet is on yes. Some of the changes include:

Bigger video: 506 pixels wide instead of 460.

Better quality video: 500kbps, instead of 400kbps (Down the road, we will convert your old videos to higher quality automatically; if you want it now, you can Replace the video)

Better video player: faster, you can Share, Embed, or Like it from anywhere you can watch it (Albums, Channels, or on external sites).

A cleaner video page

Here is the new final frame after watching a video (this is the lip dub video I referenced on the previous post): (come inside for the screenshot)

Two of my favorite video services are Viddler and Vimeo. Similar names but different strategies. I thought it would be fun to look at the differences and why each one is succeeding. Vimeo is based in NYC and Viddler is in some small town in Pennsylvania. Let’s look at several characteristics for comparison.

Video Player

This is a no-brainer — the clear winner is Viddler. Viddler has the absolute best video player on the market today. They recently even cleaned it up a bit and made it a bit prettier. Vimeo’s player is functional but boring. And when embedded on another site, it offers no clickable links back to either Vimeo or the content creator. It’s a dead end. I can only imagine how much traffic and sheer numbers of users Vimeo is losing out on by only offering such a basic video player.

Community

Both services have very passionate and interactive communities. Vimeo seems to skew a bit more affluent and to younger executives while Viddler is more mainstream and picks up a wider range of audiences. Viddler also hosts more corporate videos and content from around the world while Vimeo has, what appears to be, a larger U.S. percentage of users. Vimeo is more about community within the Vimeo Web site, while Viddler seems to be suited to sharing/embedding across the Web.

Signature Viral Element

Vimeo uses the “lip dub” as it’s signature viral element – this is where you make believe you are singing to a song but you really aren’t. There are some great ones and the one of the best is from an actress on All My Children.

Viddler’s signature viral element is the “MeToday” – this is a simple concept where you film either what you are going to do, what you are doing or what you did during the day.

The edge here goes to Vimeo as I find the lip dub’s to be fun and interesting.

Celebrity Power

Viddler gets its top star power from two people: the Wine Man, WineLibraryTV host Gary Vaynerchuk and iJustine. Here is a sample video from each:

Vimeo gets its star power from the Star magazine Editor, Julia Allison (who apparently is dating the Vimeo founder). Here is a sample of her work:

Traffic and Revenue Model

Vimeo uses banner ads currently and Viddler hasn’t shared their revenue model as of yet. Traffic is nearly impossible to compare based on what I have listed above as Vimeo is site-centric and Viddler is sharing-centric.

Conclusion

I actually like both services a lot and find that in the end a winner is too close to call. Viddler wins on tech, Vimeo on community but even those are so close. Please check out our previous Viddler coverage and I am in the process of contacting Vimeo for an interview in the coming week.
