Technorati’s cute outage message

Allen Stern - January 18th, 2007

TechnoratiSometimes its nice to take a break from it all and look at something cute.  Naturally all outages are bad (unless planned) and rather than the standard "404" or something similar, Technorati put up a cute outage message. Check it out at Technorati or my screenshot below. They should be able to find their monster quickly because they track the entire blogosphere!

I like that as well. I think YouTube’s down message is my favorite.

I write content for Kushcash.com, a new mobile phone payment company based in Aliso Viejo, California. And I have a blog too, http://www.kushcash.blogspot.com. It’s always refreshing to stick some of the funny “Ha Ha” in the unfortunate, obligatory techie things. Kudos to humor in humorless situations.

    Good for everybody!

The crappy thing about this is that none of their javascript “widgets” (scripts that say how many links there are to a post) load either. So Mashable’s pages hold up for 30 secs or so while it waits for Technorati to load the javascript – which it never does. That’s the problem with using external scripts.

Same problem with Performancing yesterday – I had to take their ads down because the service was down. Maybe widgets need to come with code so if they can't load in x seconds, move on.

Certainly plays a bigger role as we use more and more widgets. Tracking down the offender can be hard.

That’s the exact reason that I don’t use google analytics anymore. It slowed my sites down sooo bad. I use statcounter.com now, and for my popular sites I use mint (www.haveamint.com)
