TimeRime – Create Rich Media Timelines

Allen Stern - February 2nd, 2009

timerimeTimeRime is a recently-launched startup that provides an online Web tool to help you create timelines. I’ve embedded an example below featuring the Superbowl champions of all time (of course the only ones that matter are the ones the Giants won).

The timelines can include rich media — images, text, video and photos. You can annotate portions of the timeline to show patterns. When you visit the full page for a timeline, there’s also the ability to comment on the content. As you jump around the timeline, more content is displayed along with a larger image or video.

I like TimeRime because it’s easy-to-use and functional. The team tells me they have been successful in the education market to-date. I am assuming it works well for history lessons.

TimeRime is based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. They appear to be ad-supported although I could see strong partnerships with companies looking to show off their history. In my former life we created many a historical timeline and using TimeRime would have made the job much easier.

  3. I don’t really see how TimeRime is very useful or practical to the average user.

I think the look and functionality of it are very cool and the Super Bowl timeline is awesome. But like they said, the education market will probably be the biggest place they can market. It makes a great web based education tool.

The only other usage that comes to mind would be putting together a timeline for your baby so people can see his or her growth or maybe if you are having an 80th birthday party for your grandma and you want to show everyone her life on a timeline.

TimeRime’s marketing will have to get more focused and concentrated to be successful. Looking at the web site right now it’s too plain and too broad to give people a good idea of how to really utilize the product.

  4. As a teacher I can think of many other subjects where I would use the timeline. I will sure use it from now on to show my students, at the beginning of each academic year, what we are going to study and in what sequence. I will also use it to provide a general view of my course when giving feedback to my headteacher. The tool has a great potential, not only recreational, as we have shown with our blog.
From the point of view of the students, I can take them to the computer suites and ask them to design their own timelines planning their study time for their final tests, for example.

I have a suggestion, though: that we could select different languages. I would prefer to have the chance to see the calendar in English or Spanish, as these are the languages I use in my lessons.
