2006 Top Searches compared – Yahoo, Google, AOL (plus other bonuses!)

Search Engines 2006Google released its top searches today. So I thought it might be fun to do some charts showing Yahoo!, Google and AOL in several categories. I think the 2003-2006 Google chart is interesting to show what we humans searched on. Though I think maybe something changed in their counts because after 2004 the celebs seem to be missing. Entertainment dominates on the Yahoo! multi-year chart. Darshan believes that this also shows that Google searchers are more sophisticated than Yahoo!’s.

Clearly Britney Spears is the most popular search of all time. And this year she was worried that she might lose her top spot on AOL, so she decided to drop K-Fed and start “going out.” Let me know if there are others you would like to see chart’d!

Can you just imagine the discussion that the new Hollywood trio must have in their Bentleys? Might go something like this:

Britney: Did you see Yahoo! made me #1 in search. I told you Paris that kicking out that slimeball would get me up there but watch this. See after this now I will certainly be #1!
Paris: Oh you bitch. And I hate that Jessica Simpson, how did she beat me out. Let me text message Nikki to help.
Lindsay: Damnit, after all I have done, I am still only number 10. I guess I have a lot to learn from you two. Let’s party!

2006 Top Searches
I believe that Yahoo! might have misreported since AOL/Google show basically no celebs in their overall top 10, but then again, maybe Yahoo! users are more interested in Britney’s crotch or Paris’s Sidekick than the weather or video games.

Both you and Nick Carr have top 10 search terms listed. How about the top 50. Is that data available somewhere? That might prove the more homogeneous nature of Internet searches irrespective of the engine?

i think, ‘the search’ top 10 list is not shown what the real search is.
for me, i usually search using more than 2 keywords to get better result.

I think that it is really funny how each website for 2006 had such a difference in topics.
    -Yahoo all celebs like Britney
-Google all companies or important stuff like Myspace
    -Aol personal stuff like horoscopes
