Tumblr Down – Fans Angry
It appears that the microblog service Tumblr is currently down as of 6pm Eastern Time. From what we can tell, the service has been down for about an hour now. The Tumblr homepage is up and running although signing up for a new account pushes you to the error page displayed below.
A search on Twitter for Tumblr shows some very upset users (some comments NSFW) about the outage. Loading different Tumblr blogs and/or loading the same Tumblr blog provides either an the “Error” message displayed below or an overloaded servers message. Patrick on Twitter notes, “Is it just me or is Tumblr down like a solid 15% of the time?”
Interestingly, Tumblr appears to host their status blog on the Tumblr platform – so it too is down. No mention of the outage on the Tumblr Twitter account as of the time of this post.
Updated 7pm Eastern – Tumblr has replied noting, “We’re working quickly to recover from a major issue in one of our database clusters. We’re incredibly sorry for the inconvenience.”

I can view my Tumblrs but that is all. As for getting my dashboard – well I’m not – now I’m getting the increasingly lame “Due to planned database maintenance, Tumblr is temporarily unavailable. We’ll be back in just a few minutes.”

I’m now wondering if this is a more serious issue than Tumblr is letting on. 24 hours of down time? How long should it take to fix a “database” problem? Could it be that Tumblr is actually completely wiped out and they’re trying to restart the company from the beginning? In other words, is it possible that all the data was deleted and right now they’re just setting up new blank servers and hoping people will come back to them?

I understand websites have problems and such…but as a courtesy…could they at least remove the “shortly” from the end of “We’ll be back shortly”? Shortly implies a matter of minutes — an hour tops. When it’s been dead half a day and counting…that’s a bit insulting to the users. If they’re unsure of when it will back just slap a “Working On It” or something non-comittal on there. It’s ridiculous to say you’ll be back shortly. Eleven hours is not a short period of time. It’s an obviously extended amount of time.

Tumblr did a “routine maintenance” take-down of the site on 12/4/10 and it ran badly on Saturday with multiple “servers over capacity” error messages and then went down entirely on Sunday. ‘Issue with database clusters’ sounds like a major SNAFU. I’ll have to wait and see whether my blogs are still there if/when it comes back up. Pity because I spent a long time Friday & Saturday putting together a music blog with about 30 songs sequenced to parallel my analyses. If it’s not recovered, I’m going to be seriously P.O’d. As it is, I’m already looking at alternative blogging platforms.

Services like Tumblr often use geographic load balancing to facilitate and manage the amount of traffic they get. So stating that a site is down in a specific area is valid information.
