Tyra Banks…”You’re Ignoring Your Woman While Tweeting Your Momma!”
I’ve said a number of times that Twitter is really nothing more than IRC 2.0 and as I hear more stories of people addicted to Twitter, the more I believe the IRC comparison. In fact, with the daily mentions of Tweetdeck and the like, it makes it even more believable.
Today on the Tyra Banks show, Tyra interviewed people about Facebook and then interviewed a married couple where the guy is completely addicted to Twitter. Their full names and/or handles were not provided, only that the couple are Tony and Ashley. Tony you see works in tech and it’s important for him to stay connected to people in the tech and startup world. Ashley notes that when they go out for dinner and she is looking all cute, he instead spends his time twittering about the food and that he is full. Both noted that Tony does not Twitter while they are in bed.
Update: The Tony referenced on the show is Tony Zanders. He has put together a post describing his experience on the Tyra show.
Apparently Tony was close to losing his job twice because of his addiction. Frankly Tony’s addiction is the same as a person sitting on the phone all day (i.e non productive). But it’s all ok because Tony is building a company (I guess off-hours) that’s built on top of Twitter! Tyra then compares Tony’s need to Twitter with a narc’s need to smoke crack. Tony concludes by explaining how emotional he got when his mother Twittered him that she wished she was with Tony and Ashley when they went for a large Pinkberry.
Here’s a clip from the Tyra show with Tony and Ashley:

what a doofus!
This is just sad, 1. they are just learning about twitter, it’s been around since 2006.
2. To compare tweeting to smoking weed? That’s just wrong!
3. Not to see the value of communication and relationships of using twitter.. but not over using twitter.
4. Let’s go on Tara’s show and talk about Friendfeed, Disqus, backtype, brightkite and really blow there minds.
This is what happens when main stream “media” or talk shows try to look cool and talk about technology or use technology they don’t understand and devalue the service and the guest. Maybe I need to watch the entire show but from the clip it looked like a Jerry Springer twitter show.
I’m not saying I agree with the guy tweeting to the point of losing his job but from the clip it seems like it was a show to talk about twitter because it’s something “cool” that the “celebrities” are doing now.
I’m slowing decreasing my time on twitter and sticking with RSS feeds & email; to much noise.
Good capture Allen, btw we didn’t get our CenterNetwork stickers ;)
Hey hey Allen!
Thanks for catching this, and for commenting on my post too. I’ve been following your blog for a while now, even before when it was just interviews with entrepreneurs and startup execs.
Tyra was hysterical. There was very little wiggle room in what we could say, and if our story wasn’t “juicy” enough, we wouldn’t have made it on the show. I’ll keep you posted on my company as well.
Keep up the good work!
