Twitter: “It’s Like A Store For Car Parts, Right?”

NYU journalism student and Tyra Banks intern Alana Taylor has created a video where she asks NY’ers whether they have heard of Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. Most people seem to know (and use) Facebook while some know that Flickr is a photo tool and only a couple people know what Twitter is. I’d suggest that neither Flickr or Twitter is mainstream while Facebook is, especially for the college crowd.
The best response for Twitter is, "It’s Like A Store For Car Parts, Right?"

I love all the different technologies that make up Web 2.0. I also read a bunch of blogs that cover the space. When you get your news from your RSS reader, the world can seem to be all on the same page.
Well, this video shows that’s not quite true. Imagine if they had asked about FriendFeed? On the blogs, it’s everywhere. On the streets, well…
I’m going to suggest something a little blasphemous here. Most Web 2.0 technologies will go mainstream once they are adopted by companies. This turns the Web 2.0 adoption meme – viral – on its head. But I think exposure to a lot of the Web 2.0 technologies will help spread them. And the implementation by companies of these technologies will greatly expand their exposure.

Facebook is on the news all the time. Flickr has been around a lot longer then Twitter and is owned by Yahoo. Would have been fairer if compared Twitter to Jaiku and Tumblr. I bet then Twitter would come out on top for sure! I’ve been seeing these stories around and wonder at the motivation. Is it not popular enough for people yet? Do they think it should be more popular? Or is it just Twitter envy that they are innovating first and fastest? Probably a bit of all three with a leaning towards the last. New media..bah! It’s all crap. Look at Twitter, no one knows what it is. Proves the point that it’s all smoke and mirrors. Crazy thinking!
I think she was setting the tone with facebook – i bet if she walked around my hood (times square), few people would say they use facebook. More would say they use myspace.
The Australian’s don’t count? Hah.
That makes perfect sense, I struggle to explain what Twitter is and how it is of value to me at least once a day. I love social networks but to most of the people in my real life circle of friends, social networks are the people you to to the pub with on the weekends. Places like facebook and myspace to them are just considered as websites.
This is fine with me, as they don’t share the same enthusiasm for the whole “online social thing” (as they would put it) and I really don’t want to see some of the stuff that they would tweet or post anyway by some of examples they put on facebook’s supposed “fun”wall and the endless stream of horrid application requests. Don’t get me wrong I am not bagging them I don’t care what they do as long as they are having fun (within reason of course), it’s just well…. horses for courses right?
I love how Gary Vaynerchuk is all OVER the Twitter demo at the end.
