Pfft - We're not all techies from some uber connected world. I'm a grandmother and cancer patient who has been tweeting for two years.

A month or so ago my totally out of the loop husband has experienced the benefit from all the contacts I've made & is starting to dip his toes in the twitter stream. Most shocking - my un-connected 35 yo suburban mommy daughter is also getting the idea.

Jeesh, not everyone uses it effectively but my experience says it's mainstream.

Twitter def. isn't mainstream. From my experience, a large concentration of users are based in either Silicon Valley or NYC. Until it's used across the country, like a FB or MySpace, it's not mainstream.

If someone has to announce that a service is mainstream with a Wall Street Journal article, chances are that the service isn't mainstream.

The actual traffic details on twitter would be the best indicator. With 3 million visitors (take as an approximation - ref:compete) and more if usage through sms is not counted in the above, it is growing fast. Till it becomes sms = tweet, any short post = tweet, it can be considered not mainstream.

Everyone Facebooks ; few twit.
(My twit identity is pretty much alien to the rest of my identity,
and I have no idea why a couple of people chose to follow me,
or if they are people at all.)
