This is exactly what I experienced the first time I logged on to Twitter, only a little bit worse. You see, the first thing I did was try and find people that I KNEW were on the service. It took me 20 minutes of clicking around since the "Find People" function didn't work even though they did use their real names on their profile.

This is one of the motivating factors behind Simler. We do exactly what you describe and set up the new user with other people that like what they like, that are near them, all without creating a default list.

Thanks Tom - I think the most important piece of the post for startups is my last sentence. So many times it's easy to think what a dev or techie wants but it's rarely what your end user will want. I think about this every day at my startup.

Excellent post Allen. After using Twitter for so long I completely forget how much of this is second nature to us, but bewildering to new users.

Confusing, frustrating n less rewarding for a tweeterer with no wish for auto followers n not importing contact followings. Tweetering is a lonesome task. No wonder so many inactive accounts.

So all you are asking for is relevancy to your own interests. The "food" example says it all. So you either move on from Twitter.com and head to sites like Wadja.com or stay tuned and pray to find, promote or follow something relevant to your point of interest.

The future lies on #Labels as presented by wadja.com.

Thanx.
