Update on Technorati Authority Metric
Technorati has provided some details on their new authority figures they are displaying. I wrote about this yesterday and wondered how they actually calculated a site's authority value. Welp, wonder no more! From Technorati:
Technorati Authority is the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months. The higher the number, the more Technorati Authority the blog has.
Jeremiah notes, "If links coming in is considered Authority, then some A hole who says some outrageous things could be considered authoritative if everyone links to him to tell him to be quiet. Links alone can’t be authority."
I agree with Jeremiah. Though, if we look at Google, isn't the majority of their rankings based on inbound links? I would have thought T'rati would have some sort of complex mathematical formula, but it's just a simple link count. To use one of their terms, WTF. Side note, I just linked to the Technorati site so that incresed their authority by +1 :)
You can also check out my interview with BuzzLogic, a company that has some pretty involved models for authority and helps find buzz across the web.

This isn’t “new”, just relabeling the old link counter. I think it’s a rather unfortunate move, for the very reasons you bring up. There have been so many discussions on this in the past, T’rati had to know bloggers did not like equating the link count to authority, so it really strikes me as a .. hm… not-so-smart move to rename it.
(btw, your link to yesterday’s post goes to the pic, not the article)
Thanks for the link correction. I think they will use this as a way to "sell" the product to companies. If authority was a mix of several variables, it would make sense. But to use only link count over time for authorty, why change the name?
