A good start up always hires vastly more floor space than they actually need as they expect to grow fast.

Two months down the line as the echos in the empty room get a bit annoying, a third of the space is partitioned off and then sub-let to a "friendly" smaller Web 2.0 start-up that they secretly hope to buy in a few months time.

They justify it to the investors who want you to move to a cheap office out of town by calling it "due dilligance on the cheap".

Hi,

Your top10 is spot-on. In my experience I would add:

Tip#11: Peanut M&Ms. We have a dispenser in the entryway someone picked up at Target and part of my CEO duties is to be sure that puppy is full at all times.

Tip#12: Water. Late in teh day when the coffee starts to grate on everyones nerves, bottled water seems to have a calming effect. Can't explain it, perhaps because we stop drinking coffee. Also, water goes real good with peanut M&Ms in the afternoon.

I prefer plain but I hear ya Pete - I think it's cuz you get a slow flow of chocolate - rather than eating say a twix and it's gone in a minute, you can drop a m&m every minute for extra punch.

Water is good, yes.

Nice list. The only thing you forgot is that this startup should be housed in loft space, preferably with exposed brick, a sofa or two and probably some exposed brick/concrete that has those cool frosted glass dry-boards.
