The Web 2.0 Startup Map: 2009 Edition

Allex - May 16th, 2009

Back in 2006, Berlin-based Ludwig Gatzke put together a chart showing all of the Web 2.0 companies at the time. As we know, since then companies have been acquired and many have shut down for one reason or another. London-based Meg Pickard has put together a new version (seen below) of the chart which combines companies that have been acquired in green circles and companies that have closed in the letter X.

Meg works at The Guardian newspaper in the UK and updated the chart because she knew the landscape has changed since the chart was first produced. Amit at Digital Inspiration has additional comments about both charts – sadly both Meg and Amit seem to think there are only two startup review blogs :)

After watching the interview with Digg’s Owen Byrne, the truth is that the more times you fail, the more likely you are to have a success. When I was younger someone once told me that to find the perfect woman, you have to date a lot of wrong ones. If you only date one, the chances of her being perfect is pretty low.

I like the reference to dating, good one there. Totally agree with the fact that you may fail multiple times before you get to where you want.

I would add that there is also an element of not giving up.

I remember reading an article about Google when they first started Gmail when it was first implemented. At some point the Google was thinking and ready to cancel Gmail but they stuck with it and look at it now.

Of course there isn’t a story like that everyday, but a humble start and persistence will pay off at some point. I believe that every entrepreneur should leave their mark, bring value to every venture they work for, even if it fails the experience/knowledge obtained may lead you to other opportunities.

When one door closes another open.

  2. Interesting, though not completely correct. Pageflakes was acquired by LiveUniverse in April 2008, Clipmarks by Forbes in 2007 already, Nokia bought Plazes last year, Ma.gnolia is not dead yet, and Yedda is an AOL property now. At least those are the ones that I know when looking at the chart.

  3. Very cool.

An overlay I’d be interested to see (just for curiosity), would be: those left who are making money (+) vs/ still using their VC infusion (-).
