The Thirteen/WNET Interactive & Broadband department seeks an experienced PHP/MySQL/JavaScript Web developer to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity to help us take our award-winning, media-rich Web sites to the next level. The ideal person for this job enjoys learning and doesn’t mind doing it on-the-fly (and sometimes under pressure). This is an in-house (no telecommuting), freelance position, with the opportunity for full-time employment after an initial period if desired. If you love to write high-quality, optimized PHP and JavaScript, and you want to dive into problems, ask lots of questions, and are never satisfied with “good enough” – we want to meet you! And yes, what you’ve heard about laid back work hours in public television is true! So late sleepers and night-owls are encouraged to apply!

Responsibilities

* Develop Web applications for Thirteen (http://www.thirteen.org ) and PBS (http://www.pbs.org )
* Collaborate extensively with producers, designers and other developers
* Develop robust, secure plugins to extend WordPress
* Develop admin back-ends with PHP or Rails
* Develop optimized/cross-platform JavaScript & AJAX
* Develop reusable, modular code and support it’s usage

General Requirements

* A desire to learn and continuously develop your skill set
* At least three years of relevant Web programming experience
* A proven track record of launching interactive Web sites/applications
* A portfolio including a self-started W3C-standards-compliant Web-based project
* Enthusiasm for Web development best practices

Technical Requirements

* Expert level knowledge of PHP 5
* Experience developing WordPress plugins
* Experience developing full-text search engines with MySQL
* Understanding of Web application security issues and countermeasures
* Experience developing Web applications with XHTML, CSS2, and JavaScript
* Understanding of DOM methods and properties
* Experience debugging JavaScript with Firebug
* Experience developing in the LAMP environment

Desirable Skills

* Experience with Prototype and Script.aculo.us or YUI
* Experience with ActionScript, Ruby or Python
* Experience with Drupal, Joomla! or other CMS
* Experience with Rails, Pylons or other Web framework
* Experience with LAMP system administration
* Experience developing mod_perl applications with CGI and DBI
