I would say anytime that someone goes so far off topic
that it is not productive to the conversation

If you have someone just spewing garbage because they
like to press the submit button then you lock them out

but if someone just says something that respectfully
differs with your opinion then you keep it
and you think about their opinion.

I’d add (although it’s arguably part of #2) if the comment is defamatory/libelous and therefore opening you (the blogger and publisher) to litigation.

I’d negotiate with the commenter for a more tempered version of the comment and publish that, if they had left their (real) email. If not, I just wouldn’t publish it.

Surely you have comment moderation on?

… it’s spam, I’d never remove a comment. I think it’s great that people can raise their voice this way.

Or for example. I don’t like that when I report an issue somewhere, people fix it up and delete my comment/argument. That’s pretty poor. And why then have a blog where people can comment in the first place?

If you are too shy, get a contact form! ;-)

In the end it’s probably smart when you reply to all comments you get – the praise and the hate.
Not that you have to engage in a personal discussion, but if you leave everything you show character and present yourself above flames.

Also makes “e-vandalism” almost useless…
