Where’d Pownce Go?

Allen Stern - October 3rd, 2007

PowncePownce. Today it appears that Twitter won.

What happened to Pownce? In the early days Kevin Rose and Leah Culver were using the tool to provide updates and there were many replies to each of their posts. Checking Kevin’s profile today, its down to one update every three days and even a call for a party pushed Digg with no mention of Pownce in the invite.

Then we had the public Digg post about whether Digg copied Pownce with some of its new features. Mathew has an overview of the issue.

Traffic continues to slide back as well per Alexa. And most of the users on my buddy list are using it for spamming marketing links.

I still like the Pownce interface better than Twitter’s interface but if my "friends" aren’t on the network, then why use it? Are you still on Pownce? If so, please friend me so I can monitor usage of the tool.

Pownce is a great little tool. I love the features and I’ve got some really interesting people on my friends list that do use it regularly (e.g. Veronica Belmont, Cali Lewis).

But Twitter still has this edge. Update via mobile is something I use a lot via Twitter. Nothing like that on Pownce.

  2. I think that the API would help pownce and also to come out of beta/invitation only would help. Also, they need to fix some of their code, I’m doing a search right now to “friend” you, but I can’t find you on pownce. what’s your username? We have a pretty active network of friends and I find the interface a lot nicer and like the options for events..etc.

  6. Twitter claims to get 10x more traffic via their API than on their site. This could be why pownce never took off. It could also be indicative that something more complex doesnt make it better.

maybe its down to certain investors thinking that he is over extending his self.

Maybe there is no money for a decent bunch of back end developers to get the api in and they are simply waiting to get a round of funding in.
