Why I Love Los Angeles – Part II

Gary Nicholson - August 18th, 2009

Editor’s note: last week Sean Percival provided his overview of the Los Angeles tech scene. Today we have another view into the same scene from Gary Nicholson.

The startup scene in Los Angeles is an extremely vibrant community of tech-meets good old fashioned optimism and know how.. With the beautiful rain free days, amazing weather, and abundance of sunshine, Los Angeles is alive with people from all walks of life; all working toward a common goal: starting a business that involves creative minds and creative ideas all mashed together in a cohesive unit. There are at least a 1000 meetup groups here all geared toward helping those who want to bring their ideas to life and to the world.

Some of my favorite meetup groups are ones about entrepreneurs including: The Business Owner & Entrepreneur Meetup Group, South Bay Internet Entrepreneurs and the CEOSpace Los Angeles Entrepreneur & Networking. There are also good professional business social groups and internet marketing groups.

So whether its a movie script or a new technical gadget, LA is the place where dreams come true. Living in Los Angeles is like paradise with too many tourists, but the amount of people here are what also drives the ability to partner with others to create, design, implement and startup. Businesses start and stop with the rising and setting of the sun: here today, gone tomorrow. Competition is fierce, and many throw in the towel, but for the many who hang in there and keep trying, the city of Angels reaps great rewards.

One of my favorite concept is called coworking and an entity called Blank Spaces has got a pretty good deal going — you can get a space for events, meeting and even a place to work.

When it comes to local tech blogs, one of my favorites is Andrew Warner’s Mixergy. Here you can learn the ins and outs of everything startup-related.

A good place to find tech-related events in Los Angeles is DigitalLA. This site lists all things related to the tech world in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has a surprisingly vibrant tech community that is commensurate with its size. With 10mm people, it doesn’t take a large percentage to have a significant presence of computer & web focused businesses.

We are also very friendly and welcome new entrepreneurs.

I am currently doing an internship in Silicon Valley and had the chance to go to LA on two weekends and I have to admit that I kind of got addicted to that city.
Didn’t know that there are so many opportunities there for techies. I have to check again after graduating.

  4. Gary great post. I hope it convinces Allen to move to LA. We’d love to have him here. (And thanks for the compliment on my work.)

I like the different views and resources provided by Gary and Sean. I hope to travel to LA one day – seems like a cool town for both tech and tourists.
