YouTube Down
YouTube down? We have been receiving reports for the past 90 minutes that users are not able to access YouTube. Upon further testing, it looks like the YouTube CDN (static file server) is down. All images are not currently being served (see screenshot below) but videos and everything else (commenting, searching, etc.) appears to be working as normal. To the casual YouTube user, it looks like the site is down. Please leave a comment if you are noticing any other issues.
YouTube had two outages in February but since then it's been smooth sailing.
Update: 9:15am Eastern - some are now reporting via IPTools that the DNS for YouTube has been hacked. This may or may not be valid as IPTools lookup is quite crap - if you do a search for youtube.com you get back anything with youtube in it - just try microsoft.com to see the results.
Update: 9:17am Eastern - additional reports are coming in that embedded videos are also down, we can confirm that videos on CN from YouTube are not loading.
Update: YouTube is back. You may resume cat video watching.

i am in london and all of the images are broken like you show in the graphic above.
whois looks hacked.
http://www.iptools.com/dnstools.php?tool=whois&user_data=youtube.com&submit=Go
you have no idea how to interpret the result of a whois request. there is nothing that has been hacked here. try the same for microsoft.com and see the results.
The whois does indeed look like it got owned... look at the dns ffs. that looks like some noobs idea of a joke to me. look at the link before you say the guy has no idea what hes doing jackass.
YOUTUBE.COM.ZZZZZ.GET.LAID.AT.WWW.SWINGINGCOMMUNITY.COM
I'm not a jackass ... and I had already heard about many "uninformed" people reporting back the same things.
these entries in the whois database are NOT NEW and have been in for many years. use iptools to do a lookup on microsoft.com, yahoo.com, cnn.comand you'll see the same style of data.
this is because iptools is doing a substring search on the whois database.
the entry you posted above is a valid one for the domain swingingcommunity.com. just because it has the words "youtube.com" in it somewhere, people go crying "it's been hacked".
nothing got "owned". just because you cannot understand how to drive network diagnostic tools, you start trying to stir up more misinformation.
you, my friend, are a classic case of the same logic that starts riots.
i think you'll enjoy this article. it works on your same logic.

it's entitled "give us our 11 days" and refers to the julian calendar correction done in 1752. in order to fix the calendar, 11 days were removed from the calendar to put it back in sync. A Mr Hogarth led a mob who wanted their 11 days back. they thought their lives were going to be 11 days shorter.
ignorance is not bliss, it's stupidity.
cheers.
you are my hero. btw, im borrowing your ignorance quote, and the 'you are the type that starts riots' is so ROFL... youtube didnt get "pwnd" but HE did! hahaha
failed to open page, from Estonia

it's definitely down, omg, its allover the net
Open Cubicle reported on my blog that the domain expired and Google temporarily lost control of it. Haven't heard that anywhere else, though, so I have no clue if it's true or not.
the problem is to do with the nameservers for youtube.com. the domain is not due to expire until 15-FEB-2009.
guaranteed bogus that someone "lost control" of the domain.
It's definitely very possible that the domain expired. See my response to the comment you left on my blog.
Stop pimping your blog...
The reason? Simple: www.youtube.com is down, but I can go to br.youtube.com (Youtube Brazil) and watch videos - video screenshots doesn't load, though. (I'm in Brazil)
You can only get there because the DNS result has been cached for you, though. Once that cached result expires, you'll start to see what everyone else is seeing.

After waiting 45 minutes and not having a clue who would be interested, I told Scobelizer and Wired. I guess they weren't interested.
Hope that helps you figure out the story.
