Complements to TechCrunch's Video Overview

TechcrunchMark over at Techcrunch has a great writeup of many of the video services currently available and even created a handy chart comparing the services. Comes at a good time after my "Vimeo vs. Viddler" column yesterday. It appears that Blip.tv is the favorite of the TC staff and YouTube is obviously the largest. I think Mark missed a few key points so here are my complements to his article:

  • YouTube is the biggest because they are the biggest, not because they are the best. (i.e. Kleenex)
  • Many video show publishers promote their wares on multiple channels - see WineLibraryTV on blip.tv and vidder, iJustine on Revver and Viddler, etc.
  • People either use the video service their friends are using or they YouTube them. If my friends are using Veoh, so shall I.
  • Some video services either are 100% business focused or skew in that direction. It's probably not fair to compare say Blip to Vimeo.

I do believe there is room for more than one video service. While I am not sure how many is the sweet spot - the community aspects are the key - YouTube's community is less than stellar in terms of sticky power.

Subject: right on.

Thanks for your vimeo plug. We hope you will continue to find our service useful. And I can agree with you enough about "what my friends are using" argument. People often overlook this factor and try to judge an social network/sharing app on their own merits. This is what made Myspace, Facebook, Fotolog what they are and how challenging it is for a newcomer to attract and convert new users.
