I am just not sure that MS can gain any market share with the Zune. iPod is now just far too common of a name, a product, and a staple for the Zune to really do any damage with.

I did however notice that Gamestop (and maybe others) were bundling the Zune with new XBOX 360 consoles over the holidays. I would be interested to know if that plays any part in creating a boost for the Zune.

Santa (aka Me) brought my wife a Pink 4GB Zune for Christmas, now Santa's jealous. The Zune is awesome. We've had no issue with it so far, it's a breeze to use, and the Zune Pass subscription service simply makes cents (you see what I did there)?

I've written a more in-depth article, as to why I selected the Zune over the iPod on my blog (<a href="http://www.michaelwales.com/2007/12/why-i-chose-the-microsoft-zune/">direct link</a>).

I can't wait to get mine...

Comparing the marketshare of the iPod to the Zune is really somewhat of an unfair comparison.

How many models of iPod are there? How many models of Zune are there? It's kind of like comparing the marketshare of Hummer to Ford/Lincoln/Mercury. It's not an even comparison.

Regardless, I don't even necessarily think it's a matter of trying to overtake the iPod. I think it's more a matter of trying to follow directly behind the iPod. For everyone out there that's sick of the iPod, iTunes, etc., there's the Zune. Although the executives at MS might not agree, 2nd place is not a bad place to be when you think of the market they're in.

I think the goal should be more about trying to stay ahead of Creative, Samsung, etc. when dealing with the digital media player market instead of trying to surpass the iPod. If someone eventually does surpass the iPod, then huzzah for them.
